PAT Testing: In-Service Inspection & Testing
Every office, site and rented house is full of appliances somebody has to sign off. Most firms pay an outside tester because nobody in-house holds the ticket. Study online at your own pace, sit an open-book City & Guilds test and one practical day at our centre, and that somebody is you.

The theory is entirely online and yours to work through at your own pace. Five modules you can take in Explore, Deep Dive or Listen mode, and revisit as often as you like. Nothing you do online is marked. When you are ready you sit two assessments set by City & Guilds: an open-book, invigilated multiple-choice test (2377-701, 80% to pass, delivered on the City & Guilds e-volve platform) and a practical assignment (2377-702) with three tasks: inspect and test a Class I item, inspect and test a Class II item, and complete the documentation. New assessment dates are being finalised now and will be announced soon.
Who it's for
- There are no formal entry requirements, but City & Guilds recommend an electrical background or a working understanding of electrics.
- An understanding of basic electrical principles, including Ohm's law.
- Basic maths and English skills.
- Some existing knowledge of PAT testing is helpful, though the course teaches it from the ground up.
- You are expected to be familiar with, and bring a copy of, the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (5th edition). It is the permitted reference in the open-book test.

Questions, answered
Do I need to be a qualified electrician?+
No. The award is aimed at anyone responsible for testing electrical equipment, including facilities and health and safety staff, though a basic electrical background helps. There are no set entry requirements for this qualification from the awarding organisation.
Is the assessment included?+
Yes. Your £250 (+VAT) covers the online theory modules, course materials, your practical training and assessment day at our centre, your City & Guilds exam fees, and lunch and refreshments on the day. Instalment options are available.
How is the course assessed?+
Two parts, both set by City & Guilds. The online multiple-choice test (2377-701) is open book and invigilated, delivered through the City & Guilds e-volve platform, with an 80% pass mark. The practical assignment (2377-702) has three tasks: inspect and test a Class I item, inspect and test a Class II item, and complete the documentation.
How do I book the assessment?+
Work through the course online in your own time, and when you are confident, call us on 0800 197 9826 or email hello@brightpeakconnect.com. New assessment dates are being finalised now and will be announced soon. Tell us you are interested and we will confirm the date and venue for both the online test and your practical day as soon as they are set.
What happens on the practical day?+
You inspect and test equipment across the construction classes, including Class II with and without unearthed metal and Class II FE, and complete the register, test record and labels. Bring your IET Code of Practice.
Which Code of Practice does it follow?+
The IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, 5th edition, which introduced Class II FE. You bring a copy to the course and to the assessment, which is open book.
When do I get certified?+
City & Guilds issues your certificate once you pass both the online test and the practical assignment, usually within a few weeks.
