Solar is one of the fastest-growing parts of the trade, and it needs electricians who can do it right. Get the City & Guilds Level 3 award: design, install, test and maintain small solar PV systems, then prove it with the awarding body.

Three steps to certified
Work through every module here, online and at your own pace — revisit them as many times as you like.
Call or email us when you're ready and sit it in person at our training centre.
City & Guilds marks your assessment and issues the certificate — usually within a few weeks.
The theory is entirely online and yours to work through at your own pace. Six modules you can take in Explore, Deep Dive or Listen mode, and revisit as often as you like. Nothing you do online is marked and nothing online counts towards the qualification. When you are ready you sit two assessments set by City & Guilds: an open-book multiple-choice test (30 questions in 60 minutes, 22 out of 30 to pass) and a practical assignment. Both are sat in person and marked by the awarding body. New assessment dates are being finalised now and will be announced soon.
Who it's for
- You should already be a qualified electrician, holding a recognised Level 3 electrotechnical qualification (or an ECS Gold Card / JIB card) achieved within the last 5 years, or with evidence you've stayed current since.
- City & Guilds expects relevant electrical qualifications before the solar award. Check your specific route with us if you are unsure.
- This qualification is approved for learners aged 18 or above.

Questions, answered
Do I need to be a qualified electrician?+
Yes. The solar award builds on existing electrical competence, so you should already hold relevant electrical qualifications. If you are unsure about your route, get in touch and we will check it with you.
Is the assessment included in the price?+
Yes. Your £375 (+VAT) covers everything: the six online theory modules, course materials, your practical training and assessment day at our Derby Training Centre, your City & Guilds exam fees, and lunch and refreshments on the day. Instalment options are available. You just need to book your day with us. There is nothing extra to pay when you sit it.
How is the course assessed?+
Two parts, both set by City & Guilds. An online multiple-choice test of 30 questions in 60 minutes, open book, with a pass mark of 22 out of 30 (73%), and a practical assignment. Both are sat in person at our Derby Training Centre and marked by the awarding body.
Is it really open book?+
Yes. You are permitted the IET Code of Practice for Grid-connected Solar PV, BS 7671 (2018 including Amendment 3, 2024) and a calculator. Several questions are lookups rather than memory, so the course teaches you to find your way around the books.
Is there a practice test?+
Yes. The course includes a full practice knowledge test: 30 questions, 60 minutes, drawn and weighted just like the real paper, with a breakdown by topic afterwards. It is practice only and does not count towards the qualification, and you can sit it as often as you like before you book your day.
Can I study in my own language?+
Yes. The course can be studied in Polish, Romanian or Russian. Key technical terms and standard names stay in English, because that is how they appear in the books and on the test.
How do I book my assessment?+

What about MCS?+
MCS certification is a separate installer scheme. This City & Guilds award is the recognised training that sits behind competent solar PV work, and covers the MCS standards (MIS 3002) and procedures (MGD 005 shading, MGD 003 self-consumption) you will use on the job.
When do I get certified?+
City & Guilds issues your certificate once you pass both parts of the assessment, usually within a few weeks.
